You Can Get It If You Really Want: What Jimmy Cliff Teaches Us About Branding and Jamaican Excellence
(November 27, 2025)
On November 24, 2025, Jamaica and the world lost one of its greatest cultural icons.
“It’s with profound sadness that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure followed by pneumonia. I am thankful for his family, friends, fellow artists and coworkers who have shared his journey with him,” his wife, Latifa Chambers, wrote on Instagram. He was 81 years old.
His passing reminded us not only of the greatness he carried, but of the power one Jamaican can have on the world when they stand firmly in their purpose.
The Man Who Carried Jamaica in His Voice
Jimmy Cliff’s voice has travelled generations, genres and continents. His music gave hope in hard times, joy in good times and pride whenever Jamaicans heard it anywhere in the world. His catalogue is more than entertainment. It is cultural memory, storytelling and identity.
But when I look at his career, I also see a blueprint for branding, storytelling and longevity. Jimmy Cliff built a legacy without ever losing himself, and that is the mark of a timeless brand.
How Jimmy Cliff’s Journey Began: A Bold Teen With a Big Dream
Jimmy Cliff, born James Chambers in 1944, left rural St. James as a teenager and moved to Kingston determined to pursue music. That determination paid off when he recorded “Hurricane Hattie” at around 17 years old, marking his first major hit and placing him firmly on Jamaica’s musical map.
“Hurricane Hattie” was released in 1962.

The Moment Jamaica Reached the World
His true global breakthrough arrived in 1972 with the film The Harder They Come. Not only did he play the lead role of Ivanhoe Martin, but the soundtrack featuring The Harder They Come, You Can Get It If You Really Want and Many Rivers to Cross became a cultural landmark. The film pushed reggae onto the world stage and solidified Jimmy Cliff as one of Jamaica’s most influential cultural ambassadors.
Jimmy Cliff did more than sing. He acted with honesty and carried stories that reflected the Jamaican experience with depth and realism. In The Harder They Come, he played Ivanhoe “Ivan” Martin, an ambitious young man who leaves his rural community for Kingston in search of opportunity. When the city fails him at every turn through poverty, exploitation and corruption, Ivan becomes a folk hero after turning to an outlaw’s life. Through this role, Jimmy Cliff showed the world the grit, frustration, dreams and resilience that shape Jamaican life. His performance offered an unfiltered look at the social pressures everyday Jamaicans faced and revealed the beauty, defiance and spirit we carry even in struggle.
