Pig Ups JA: A Farmer’s Determination to Bring Delicious, Local Flavour to His Fellow Jamaicans

Ricardo Campbell is the epitome of a real Jamaican. He was brought up in the heart of Jamaica’s farming culture and learned the true meaning of hard work from his grandfather.

After leaving high school, Ricardo began his entrepreneurial journey by raising 25 chickens while working and travelling to discover himself. At the time, he called his business Campbell’s Agro Broilers.

In 2018, his grandfather introduced him to pig farming and that’s where the love story began. Four years later, in 2022, Ricardo completed a six-week course in Pig Management at CASE. By 2023, he officially registered his business, PigUpsJA.

Today, PigUpsJA specialises in a variety of pork and chicken products, including specialty cuts and parts. For those who enjoy the smokier side of life, they offer bacon, ribs, smoked pork chops, ham slices, and smoked chicken. The brand also provides convenience for busy families and professionals with their marinated, pre-seasoned pork and chicken that’s ready to cook.

Ricardo has dedicated his time to developing value-added products that meet the needs of families, social groups, and working Jamaicans who want both flavour and quality.

But with every business comes challenges. Ricardo shared,

“My biggest challenge now is securing enough capital to scale my operations and become an official local manufacturer.

Like many entrepreneurs, Ricardo has faced moments of uncertainty and frustration. From customers disappearing without paying, to losing everything after his chickens were attacked by rats, he has endured more than his fair share of setbacks. He admits there are decisions he regrets, like giving up too early when the way forward seemed uncertain.

What keeps him going, however, are his loyal clients and customers. He feels a deep sense of responsibility to provide quality food at the highest standard.

This journey has forced him to grow in every way: personally, professionally, and emotionally. He has learned to become more confident and outspoken so he can represent his brand with pride.

“My biggest change has been my mindset: dream it, believe it, and achieve it.”

These words keep him grounded when life feels overwhelming. He has learned that a blocked path isn’t the end of the road. Instead, it can be a sign to pivot or change direction.

“Look outside the building, not just outside the box. Go beyond the usual boundaries. Keep moving forward and trust that it will work out one way or another.”

Ricardo’s story is one of resilience, vision, and determination: proof that success is not about how many times you fall, but how many times you start again.

Finally, Ricardo shared his gratitude for those who have helped him along the way:

“I want to give a heartfelt shoutout to my family, especially Diandra Maitland, who has always reassured me when making some of the toughest decisions. A big thank you also goes to Lanisia Rhoden and her NGO, Young Women and Men of Purpose, for helping me discover my purpose and unlock my potential. And of course, I can’t forget Sidonae Scott, who has been the incredible lead cook behind all PigUpsJA products.”
